Professor John Frank took on the role of Director in 2008. He brings with him a strong background not only in public health research but in effectively championing teamwork between public health researchers and public policy decision makers.
John trained in Medicine and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, in Family Medicine at McMaster University, and in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. From 1983 until 1991 he was Professor at the University of Toronto, in the Department of Public Health Sciences. He was the founding Director of Research at the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto from 1991 to 1997.
In 2000, he was appointed inaugural Scientific Director of the Institute of Population and Public Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
He holds a chair in public health at the University of Edinburgh in Public Health Research and Policy. His broad research and professional interests concern the determinants of population and individual health status, and especially the causes, remediation and prevention of socio-economic gradients in health.
In 2013 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his contributions.
